About the Score

While the choral catalog is full of wonderful Christmas music, (both arrangements of traditional carols and new music), the Advent season seems to have only a few musical offerings to choose from. This Advent anthem was born of a desire to share the yearning and expectation of the Advent season and to honor its place in the Christian journey. The author of the text is unknown, but is thought by scholars to have been writen by a nun at Notre Dame in either 1891 (perhaps published in "Convent Hymns and Music by the Sisters of Notre Dame) or in 1903.

What we find in the poetry is an earnest plea for the coming of the Savior in a post-Resurrection world, and an acknowledgement of our own place in the story.

I composed new music to pair with this lovely text as a gift to the choir I lead at Divine Shepherd Church in Omaha, Nebraska, and as a contribution to the global choral catalog of Advent anthems. The piece is appropriate for both worship and the concert stage, and the keyboard writing is intended to be supportive and independantly artistic.

The choral parts have no divisi, and the vocal ranges are deliberately constrained to allow for all singers to enjoy both melodic and supportive lines with both comfort and skill.
