An “American Chant” from the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The Canon of Christmas is carefully constructed to present something of the dynamism and just-barely-restrained joy that is typical of Orthodox festal services. The melodic and textural simplicity conceals a rhythmic liveliness and intricacy. The music sounds neither new nor old—or perhaps both—but is instead timeless. This piece is deeply connected to the sound of the English language and to the spirit of the best American sacred singing. May be sung by a small or large chorus.
