About the Score

Searston Beach

4'30". Commissioned by Quintessential Vocal Ensemble. A beautiful folksong-like setting of Al Pittman's "Searston Beach." Opening with the upper voices in unison, the melody tranforms into a depiction of the rolling waves. First movement of the "Al Pittman Suite."

Angels

3'. Commissioned by Quintessential Vocal Ensemble. A nostalgic and contemplative reflection on childhood in winter, when the snow angels we made "were so real they'd take flight out of the snow." The piece culminates with the sopranos sustaining over the pulsating lower parts, tapering to a close. Second movement of the "Al Pittman Suite."

The Dance of the Mayflies

5'30". Commissioned by Quintessential Vocal Ensemble. This challenging and dramatic piece is one of Kathleen Allan's largest choral works. The culmination of her "Al Pittman Suite," it has feature moments for every section of the choir, and reaches a soaring climax before ending with a meditative, repetitive chanting of the text "over and over again." Third and final movement of the "Al Pittman Suite."
