About the Score

"Someday" was originally composed on commission from The St. Augustine Orchestra to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was a programmatic work for orchestra and baritone soloist that offered a musical impression of the historical events that led up to this monumental event in our nation’s history. Despite the progress that has been made since this legislation became law, the time period of the enslavement and oppression of the African American continues to inform us a people, and in commemorating this anniversary, there was an opportunity to assess the present as we seek to secure a better future. This adaptation for chorus and piano is informed by the aesthetic of the spiritual, which has influenced nearly every genre of American music. Choral "Someday" is in two sections: after a brief opening, a vigorous setting of Annette Talbert’s poem, "Marching Towards the Light: June 1964", recalls the events that occurred in St. Augustine that June. Ms. Talbert is a graduate of Flagler College and a student of the history of St. Augustine. The second section of "Someday" is a setting of a hymn text by Rev. Albert Tindley, I Will Overcome Someday, which served as the inspiration for "We Shall Overcome." This great anthem of the Civil Rights movement is briefly quoted as the music concludes.
