Lyricist and songwriter Eddie Robertson found hope in music and in singing, though not in the way one might expect. As an incarcerated person, the opportunity to write music and to sing helped him find the community that he lacked. Robertson is a member of a prison choir founded by award-winning choral conductor and activist Cathy Roma. In her words: “People who are incarcerated must be included in our world of music making … They are creative human beings, with open hearts and minds receptive to learning, growing, and changing … The transformative power of music and choral communities encourages spiritual and emotional development, fosters artistic expression, and teaches how to build community and cooperation.” Through this lens, Robertson's gospel-style melody takes on a whole new perspective. As Roma says: “Music is the currency of hope and resilience.”
