About the Score

This song is meant to be performed by anyone for everyone. It was written as part of a project bringing together culture bearers, composers, and music educators to spotlight tradition, language, and the arts. It was funded through an Arts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tyler LaMere created this melody in Hōcąk (HoChunk) based on oral history given to the Winnebago from the Algonquian. It is an Indigenous Found Song (ABABA form) and should be performed either without a drum or with the provided Hand Drum recording. Directors and teachers are asked to contextualize the song for singers and audiences by reading the full or summarized story of Wašjįk (Rabbit).
