About the Score

Freemasonry is a group of fraternal organizations for men that dates back to the fourteenth century. During Mozart's time, the Masons espoused the ideals of the Enlightenment: brotherhood, liberty, tolerance, and separation of church and state. Mozart, along with many prominent men of his time, was an active freemason. Masons used music in many of their ceremonies, holding the belief that music "inculcates feelings of humanity, wisdom and patience, virtue and honesty, loyalty to friends, and finally an understanding of freedom." Mozart wrote four cantatas and numerous songs for Masonic ceremonies, and Masonic ideals are interwoven into the plotline of his famous opera The Magic Flute.

He composed the Freemason Cantata (Freimaurerkantate) November 15, 1791, for the dedication of a new masonic lodge. Mozart died less than a month later, and the cantata exists as his final completed work. Laut verkünde unsre Freude is both the opening and final movement of the cantata.
