Haneirot Halalu (We Kindle These Lights) | Jonathan Miller | MusicSpoke - $2.00 x

About the Score

This is Jonathan Miller's setting of a traditional Chanukah prayer (SATB+piano). The zippy opening gives way to a slower, more contemplative middle setting before returning to the opening material to set up the ending. This prayer traditionally is recited on each night of the festival, *after* lighting the menorah. The prayer reminds us that the Chanukah candles aren't intended to do any work for us -- but they are there instead for us simply to gaze on them in wonder. This gazing in turn helps us to recall the miracle of Chanukah, at which a supply of consecrated oil that was only supposed to last for a single night ended up burning for eight nights. The lyrics are in English except for the refrain, "Haneirot halalu anachnu madlikin" -- "We kindle these festive lights." (For choirs desiring a bit more of a challenge, the entire work can be sung in Hebrew, for which additional lyrics are provided in the score.)
