Fantasy and Fugue inspired by the Star-Spangled Banner - $5.00 x

About the Score

Ah, the Star-Spangled Banner. Such a nice tune, but it's become all-too- familiar—and dare I say, a bit worn?—over the years in its traditional brass harmonization, or a cappella renditions (not with Whitney Houston, though!). In the summer of 2011 I was inspired after hearing another, less traditional rendition—from the Dixie Chicks at the Super Bowl in 2003. Such nice harmonic surprises!

This piece unwinds from a modest 4-part chorale into a florid, pianistic rendition of the tune with some surprise twists, interrupted by an extended, manic fugue whose subject comes from the first line, and returning finally to the home key in triumph, but with jagged harmonies and dissonances.
