Dear Madam President is my first multi-movement work, and my first work for treble voices, - and perhaps the work I am most proud of. This piece began as a commission from a new friend who wanted to hold a benefit concert with a professional treble choir, featuring a woman at the piano and music exclusively by women composers. It grew into a two-movement work that looks optimistically into the future of a young girl. A third movement was born months later through another commission for treble choir, and the work transformed into a coming-of-age time capsule. The poetry is by myself, Sara Teasdale, and Emory Hall.

Like so many other women in my country, I hope to see a woman elected president in my lifetime. That said, it takes time, love and patience to raise a great leader, and there are so many young women in the world who don’t know their worth. I hope that this music emboldens its performers and listeners to reach out to young people in their lives - especially those that need extra support - and let them know how much the world needs their strength and heart.
