About the Score

"Ave maris stella" is a six-voice motet commissioned by Redshift Music Society for the Vancouver Cantata Singers. In this hymn, the "star of the sea" is a metaphor for Mary, whose example offers guidance to people on their journeys through life. Both the text and melody of the mediæval chant are heard in the hymn’s seven verses, with voices calling out “Ave, ave, ave” before each verse.
