Tinsley Silcox

Tinsley E. Silcox serves as Choirmaster at St. Mark’s School of Texas and as Director of Music atNorthPark Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX. He began his choral conducting career at age sixteen, and has since served choirs in a variety of settings, including churches, schools, community choruses, and professional ensembles. His teachers include Donald Neuen, Paul Salamunovich,Jester Harriston, and Robert Shaw. Among his credits are numerous musical theater productions,Founder and Director of the professional chamber music ensemble "Bel Canto", Founder and Director of the Lafayette-Oxford-University Community Chorus in Oxford, Mississippi, Assistant Director of the University of Tennessee Concert Choir, and Guest Conductor of the SMU Concert Choir. He served as Director of Choral Activities ad Interim for the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU for the 2001-02 academic year. During his tenure at NorthPark Church, the Sanctuary Choir has performed numerous large works with orchestra, including Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem, Rutter’s Gloria and Requiem, Duruflé’s Requiem, and Beethoven’s Mass in C Major. Choirs at NorthPark under his direction have sung for the Advent Sing in Vienna, Austria where the choir also performed at Schönbrum Palace, for the Festival Chorale Toscana in Montecatini Terme, Italy, and at cathedrals across the UK, including St. Paul’s in London, Glouchester Cathedral, and St. Jiles in Edinburgh. While in Rome, the choir was invited to sing noon Mass on the Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The St. Mark's School of Texas Choir and Schola has a 64-year tradition of singing Choral Evensong for the campus community. The St. Mark's Choir travels internationally every two year, most recently serving as the choir in residence at Wells and Ely Cathedrals in the UK during the summer of 2013. Other recent trips include a 17-day good will tour of South Africa, where the choir performed in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Soweto, Pretoria, and with the Drakensberg Boy's Choir. The St. Mark's Upper School Choir has its own performance schedule, and recently sang the National Anthem at both Dallas Mavericks andTexas Rangers games. Silcox's composition The Creation, based on the poem from James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombones, was premiered in December 2010 by the Cedar Hill (Texas) High School A Cappella Choir, and performed in April at the Morten H. Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas. His newly composed work for concert band, The Path, was premiered by the St. Mark’s School of Texas Concert Band. In addition to his duties at North Park Church, Tinsley Silcox also serves as Director of Libraries and Information Services at St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas. His former positions include Director of the Jake and Nancy Hamon Fine Arts Library and Director of the G. William Jones Film and Video Collection at SMU, Director of the Blues Archives, Music Librarian and Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi and Acting Head of the George F. DeVine Music Library at the University of Tennessee. Mr. Silcox is the author of numerous music library guides, and was principle investigator for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to catalog the largest collection of blues 45 rpm recordings in existence. His grant “Preserving the Heritage of African-American Filmmakers”digitized and produced a 3-DVD boxed set of representative films from the Tyler Texas Black Film Collection held at SMU. His articles have appeared in such journals as Living Blues, Mississippi Libraries, Legends, and Fontes Artis Musicae. His paper, Of Blacksmiths and Buggy Whips: Academic Librarians, Faculty, and the Technology Paradigm, was presented
