Mark Weiser

Composer Mark Lanz Weiser has had his music performed internationally by major orchestras, ensembles and performers. He has received numerous commissions and awards, including most recently the 2015 ASCAP Nissim prize for his Second Symphony, and has been in residence at the Yaddo artist colony in New York and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Writing for the voice has been integral in Weiser’s composition career. An early song cycle using poetry of Wilfred Owen, written when Weiser was 20, won first prize in the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Art Song competition and was subsequently published by Boosey & Hawkes. The following year, Weiser’s first opera, Purgatory, based on the play by William Butler Yeats, premiered at the Peabody Conservatory to wide acclaim. Since that time, Weiser has composed two more operas, including Where Angels Fear to Tread, a St. Mark Passion modeled after the Passions of J. S. Bach, numerous songs and song cycles, and works for voice and orchestra. Instrumental works include orchestral music, multiple instrumental and chamber compositions, and concertos for organ, marimba, and saxophone quartet. Weiser’s music can also be heard in a number of commercial and independent films.
