About the Score

"Yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä" is a well-known children's song in Finland, and contains two particular characteristics that reflects this Nordic country's affinities. Finns have a deep respect of nature nature, with the forest in particular; and Finnish songs can often be very melancholic. As a counterpoint, Élise Gauthier has written an accompanying text in French which encourages the singers and the audience to be inspired by the very actively energetic nature which surrounds them to find their happiness. The piece is a quodlibet, which is two distinct melodies that stand on their own, but can also be superimposed. In this case, we have one in Finnish, and the other in French. Premiered December 2019 at the Choralies hosted by Les Ensembles vocaux De La Salle in Ottawa, Canada
