Ubiquitous among nursery rhymes, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod is a fantasy bedtime story for children. Originally titled Dutch Lullaby (hence the sailing off in a wooden shoe and the use of "y" instead of "i" in the first two character names), the poetry has a natural rhythm and liveliness to it which is captured in the melody and instrumental parts of the setting. It is originally composed to be performed with flute and string quartet accompaniment; an alternate setting for flute and piano accompaniment is also available.
