About the Score

Joy is part of a collection of pieces called Virtues of Resistance. Each piece in Virtues of Resistance explores a different virtue that inspires us to become activists or that we may experience within struggle – Faith, Anger, Courage, Community, Love and Joy. Joy sets a quote attributed to Fannie Lou Hamer. The struggle to win and sustain equality is ongoing, and that struggle can feel overwhelming if you can’t find the joy – joy in the community of people at your side, joy in finding a new understanding of yourself and the world, joy in the victories, however fleeting or incomplete. Joy is a celebratory and exuberant piece that features lively rhythms and contrasting harmonies.
