About the Score

This 2-voice motet, Verbum caro factum est from Kleine geistliche Konzerte II, is one of many smaller scale vocal works composed by Heinrich Schütz during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48). This collection of motets is an early example of musical composition designed entirely for the practical application to a given situation. The Thirty Years’ War meant that Schütz had only 10-16 singers and just a handful of instrumentalists. It contains attractive Baroque modes of expression, and requires only 2 voices and basso continuo. The above recording by the treble choir at Eastern Michigan University was performed with sopranos/altos, cello, and a small portative organ.

Featured on the mirabai ICON Series.
