About the Score

There is no Rose' is a new setting of an anonymous 14th century text. This new carol is characterised (as is the third movement of Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols') by its simplicity and archaic, medieval style. With a monothematic structure, slight variations on the theme are presented in each stanza, almost in a minimalist way. Of particular note is the change to the major mode in the refrain with Latin text, and the return to the minor mode to preserve the humble tone. The coda is simple and austere, and is treated as an epilogue. There is no Rose' was premiered by NEOVOCALIS on 10 December 2022, as part of their Christmas project SLEIGH RIDE.
