About the Score

“Sundial” is a musical meditation on the passing of time. The structure of this piece is intended to mimic the passing of hours in a day, from 6:00AM to 6:00PM, sunrise to sunset. Each hour is assigned a musical motive, and the two choirs take turns introducing these motives. The piece moves through each key area in the circle of fifths, to imitate the cyclical nature of our lives. The text for this piece is a collection of Latin mottos which were engraved on sundials. The practice of engraving mottos into sundials began in around the 16th century and invites passersby to reflect on the passing of time and the brevity of life.
