"Sub Specie Aeternitatis" is an ethereal work that will draw listeners into the realm of eternity, erasing all sense of time and identity. The elegant simplicity of this work demonstrates the idea that simplicity is often the ultimate sophistication. This masterful piece will undoubtedly guide listeners through a deeply philosophical and intimately psychological experience as it did for me.

  • Very Nice Miniature

Bob Paolinelli on October 28, 2015

Although I'm not a big fan of most minimalist music, this piece was different and better. I especially liked the harmonic feel of it, which is much more adventurous than much of what I've heard that is described as minimalist. As for the performance, it was good but could have been better if the dynamics varied a bit more. Overall, I enjoyed the piece very much.

Very Nice! reminds me of a Debussy Piece with all of the clustered chords. I can see this being featured in a movie.

Indeed minimal in nature, the space encompassing each note and progression seemed just as important as the notes themselves. I was drawn to immediate and tense reflection. Both brief and fulfilling.

I love this piece of post minimalist music. As an essentially minimalist composer, though in a different vein to most, I love the implied references to minimalism which only help to produce the beautifully poignant essence of the piece. To me it is a haunting and ethereal piece. Great. More power to your elbow Ezra Donner. A piece that speaks of now. Thank you.

The way Mr. Donner intertwines melodic chord structures with additional elements of complex dissonance is complicated yet still very pleasing to the ear. This piece takes me to distant points in the Universe and to me, echoes the sounds of Creation and formation of the Cosmos itself. I want to hear more! Thank you for sharing this slice of a larger work, Ezra!! All the best, Porter Landrum

Reminds me of George Caccioppo and John Cage. Refreshing, clear, tonal, challenging enough to be interesting.

Although the 'Rating' stars seem not to be working for me to register FIVE STARS, I have thoroughly enjoyed "Sub Specie Aeternitatis" since first hearing. The meter is engaging; and the sometimes-atonal segments captured me very early on. Maestro Ezra Donner performed this piece as part of his "The American Piano" concert series, on May 8, 2015, in Richwood, West Virginia, USA. I have had the honor to follow Donner's work for several years. I also dearly love his, "Mountain Suite" and "Steel Sky."
