The St Andrew's Mass is a setting of the ordinary mass for two choirs: a full SATB choir which sings in Latin, and a quartet or semichorus which sings in Scottish Gaelic. There is an incredibly rich singing tradition in the Gaelic language, including highly ornamented responsorial psalm singing still practiced by Presbyterian congregations in the Outer Hebridies, and mouth music or nonsensical, highly rhythmic folk songs intended to accompany dances. However, generally speaking these traditions are un-notated. This piece hopes to bring some of this beauty of Gaelic singing into a mass setting. The languages are vastly different in most respects, from the vowel and consonant sounds they use most frequently to the patterns of syllabic emphasis and grammatical conventions, which allows this piece to explore a wide variety of sounds. However, there are of course phrases which will sound familiar in both languages, and the sounds of the groups do unify and work together to bring across that feeling of tradition and ritual which should accompany a mass setting.
