Kurt Knecht's Sonata for Bassoon and Piano. The first movement, "Balancing the hard edges," combines angular and rhythmic figures, contrapuntal writing, and plaintive material in mixed meters. The second movement, "Floating on the ecstatic sea," explores lyrical writing over polychords in the piano to evoke a meditative mood. The third movement, "Quirk" is an almost Bersteiny bit of joy.
