About the Score

Sancta Maria is a musical setting of the Edgar Allen Poe poem of the same title. The unaccompanied vocal music of Sancta Maria is a prayer of petition to the Virgin Mary for compassion and presence upon one’s life journey. The piece, laid out chorale style across four stanzas, represent the prayer’s natural progression: humility, supplication, reflection, and assurance. The G-flat major-based harmonies and calming tempo are the anchoring elements that yield the music’s reverential sentiment.
