As someone who grew up not too far from the Shenandoah River, this song has always held a special place in my heart. The text in the second verse, “I long to see your shining valley…”, was selected specifically for the commissioning group, which is located in the Shenandoah Valley. This setting of the traditional American song combines it with the Scottish folksong ‘The Water is Wide’, and is available in 2-part treble choir and SAB voicings.
