About the Score

Bell tones heralding the celebration of the victorious ship are set against impassioned phrases of shock that the leader has perished. This poem, metaphorical for the Civil War and the fallen Lincoln, depicts the starkness of a fresh tragedy. This movement serves as a center of a large choral song cycle, and the poem is the most widely known and most grim of the Whitman poetry selected by the composer.

"O Captain! My Captain!" may be performed with piano or in its full instrumentation with handbells (3-7 octaves) in place of the piano part. A handbell part is available, as is a full score with a choral reduction.

The premiere was given by Choral Arts Initiative, led by Artistic Director Brandon Elliott, in the June 2018 PREMIERE|Project Festival. March 24, 2019, "Shoreline" concert program, Choral Arts Initiative, Orange County, CA

Featured on the Choral Arts Initiative Series on MusicSpoke.
