About the Score

" Nightscape was inspired by the landscape of Rochester, New York from my apartment window high above, while looking across the city in the late-night hours of a late-autumn night. The city is a different place at night, a quiet and lonely ghost-city that is transformed only by day. The first section of the piece reflects on this vast, expansive space and the quietness of a large city by night. It is a lonely place, yet the many street lamps and traffic signals reflect and ricochet light off the tall, dark buildings creating a vibrant, yet haunting juxtaposition of life and dark. The middle section is a thoughtful, but angst ridden melody, that pushes towards a climax of intense emotion and despair before dissolving into a return to the beginning of the piece - only not quite. Out of the climax, a glassy, ghostly echo of something once familiar emerges, almost like a distant memory from another time. From this ghostly memory, a new melody emerges; a melody that is filled with hope and passion, that leads to a peaceful closing section. Perhaps, symbolizing the coming of dawn, and returning life to the city as the cycle can begin anew.
