About the Score

This setting of Emma Lazarus’ powerful New Colossus was originally written as the finale to my choral cycle about immigration, We Came Searching for a Home. Moving from soprano solo to duet to a full choral setting, it sets her powerful words - “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Now engraved at the base of the Statue of Liberty, the words live as a beacon and a symbol of hope, a reminder that we are at our very core a nation of immigrants; a mosaic of cultures, beliefs, and diversity.
