About the Score

Mother of Exiles is designed to evoke the cry of Lady Liberty and of the immigrants to run to her. Its theme is simple, like a mother’s lullaby to her children around the globe. But with every line the piece grows, until it bursts into both an anguished cry of those currently fighting to meet her, and those rejoicing to be in the Mother of Exiles’ embrace. This piece was commissioned in 2025 for the Festival Singers of Florida, under the direction of Dr. Kevin Fenton, and was chosen as a reminder of what this nation has always, and will continue to stand for.
