Shape-note music has been a part of the American musical landscape from the beginning. Its roots are traced through our British and Irish immigrant ancestors, who brought their folks songs, dance music, and hymnody to our shores during the colonial era. I’ve attempted to capture the sound and the spirit of these colonial musicians joined to the timeless words of the Mass in my Melodious Sonnet: A Colonial American Mass. My love of the deeply moving sounds of Appalachian folk songs all inform and inspire this piece. Enjoy, worship, and sing this music with your hearts tuned to sing God’s praise.
