Unison

“Meditation,” inspired by my experience with the COVID-19 pandemic and a meditation shared with me by Laurie Goldstein Padrón, was created for live-remote performance during the time of distancing and isolation. It works well performed in-person. The latency inherent in online platforms is incorporated as an artistic element—the work is largely aleatoric, where singers repeat specific phrases purposely out of synch with the others on their voice parts. The piece follows a journey from chaos to calm, mirroring the experience of meditating in a time of distress. Commissioned and premiered by a consortium of thirteen choirs (please see the list of consortium members in the score).

The unison version of “Meditation” is an adaptation of a piece of the same title composed in 2020. The original version of “Meditation,” inspired by my experience with the COVID-19 pandemic and a meditation shared with me by Laurie Goldstein Padrón, was created for live-remote performance during the time of distancing and isolation. The latency inherent in online platforms was incorporated as an artistic element—the choir created a swirl of sound, over which a soloist sang the melody. In this version, the chorus sings the melody while the pianist expresses the harmonies and cross-rhythms originally sung by the choir. The piece follows a journey from chaos to calm, mirroring the experience of meditating in a time of distress. Originally commissioned and premiered by a consortium of thirteen choirs (please see the list of consortium members in the score); this version was created for the Goldenrod Chorale.
