About the Score

This selection is the third Romance of Opus 69 of Schumann. In this setting, he depicts the lament of a woman that has seen her youth escape. The protagonist blames her mother, as she was cloistered during her youth. Here, Schumann gives the first altos the melody within the four-part, homorhythmic texture. The other voices act as a frame for this beautiful and melancholic expression.
