‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers (314) is one of the best known poems by American poet, Emily Dickinson. I was drawn to this poem not for its fame, but for the dynamic and imaginative language that underlies it. The poem is an extended metaphor, likening the concept of hope to a bird that is permanently perched in the souls of each and every one of us. There it sings, never once stopping in its quest to inspire.
