About the Score

What's real? A question so simple, and yet which has obsessed philosophers through the ages, from Plato to Descartes. A question, moreover, which has taken on new urgency in an age of "Post-Truth," alternative facts and deep fakes. How can we spot what's phony? Are the senses to be trusted at all? How can we know, for instance, that the Obama speaking in an online video is really... Obama? And what to make of the — eerily convincing! — hologram of a choir singing before you today!?

The poem "flat earth" was written for Halifax' The Aeolian Singers' concert "Veritas" by Franco-Ontarian author Paul Ruban.

This piece is meant as a satirical commentary on fake news, alternative facts and the trickery of the senses in our "post-truth" era. _______________

Qu'est-ce qui est vrai? Une question si simple, et pourtant qui n'a pas cessé de tarauder les philosophes au fil du temps, de Platon en passant par Descartes. Une question, aussi, qui redouble de pertinence dans notre ère de « post-vérité», de faits alternatifs, et de deep fakes. Comment faire pour déceler le vrai du faux ? Peut-on se fier à nos sens? Savoir sans l'ombre d'un doute que l'Obama dans cette vidéo en ligne est vraiment... Obama? Et qu'en est-il de cet hologramme — bougrement réussi, ma foi! — de ce chœur qui chante pour vous aujourd'hui!?

Le morceau se veut un commentaire satirique sur les fake news et la fragilité du réel dans une êre de « post-vérité. »
