About the Score

“Da pacem Domine” is a musical search for peace. It explores the basic question whether we humans can ever find peace on our own, or whether we need guidance from some higher power or divine force. It is dedicated to two dear relatives named James: my grandfather Jimmy Rain (1895–1974), a World War I vet, who showed me such love as a boy and a young man growing up; and my cousin Jamie Shaw (1959–2019) whose courage, good spirit and humour throughout his terminal illness was an inspiration to all who knew him. The middle section of “Da pacem Domine” includes a 6-part canon over which a narrator may optionally recite a Remembrance Day or anti-war poem. In the sample recording included here, “In Flanders Fields” has been recited.
