About the Score

This carol was commissioned in 2007 by the Orfeón Universitario de Valencia (Spain), in commemoration of its 60th anniversary. The lyrics are taken from a Portuguese carol, known as 'Olhei para o Céu' or 'Natal de Elvas', but now set with new music. As the lyrics are in Portuguese, I thought of putting a bossa-nova rhythm. The result is a very colorful carol, which includes the harmonies and sensuality of Brazilian music. It is very appropriate for Christmas, but can also be programmed at any time of year. The recording was made in 2008 by the Orfeón Universitario de Valencia (Spain), directed by Constantino Martínez, and included in their album 'Nadal al 60'.
