About the Score

This setting of the “Ave Maria” is based on the original chant melody found in the Liber Usualis. The melody, primarily in the soprano line, is supported by stunning harmonies in the other vocal parts. The climax of the piece is not at the conclusion, but rather at the text “Sancta Maria Mater Dei” (“Holy Mary Mother of God) which occurs at a point in the music that delineates the “divine proportion,” the most beautiful number in the Universe. Why? According to Christian tradition, this text expresses the role of Mary, as the Mother of God, in which Jesus her Son came into the world: “The Word became Flesh.”

PERFORMANCE SUGGESTION: Performing the piece up a half step is preferable. The present key (F major) is provided for ease of learning.
