This piece came from an experience a friend shared with me early one morning. I remember her writing to tell me about a bird being trapped in her bedroom, but should couldn’t figure out how it got there since she had screens on her windows. She said it felt surreal, like a dream, and also filled with her an intense sadness and sense of longing. When she asked me what I thought it meant, we went back and forth, our writing becoming increasingly abstract as we tried to capture an event that, in our minds, took on a symbolic a meaning. This text is taken from those exchanges.
