About the Score

Alleluia was written in the summer of 2006, immediately after leading a collegiate choir through a tour of my home state of Pennsylvania. It greatly impressed me to see those singers, mostly native Texans, as they reacted with so much awe to the beautiful natural scenery of the place where I had grown up. I chose to set this single-word text as an act of gratitude for the earth’s incredible beauty, and as a reminder to myself that I should never take for granted the places, events, and people that have shaped who I am. At the time of its writing, I was experimenting with modality, favoring musical modes over adherence to any traditional key. As such, most of Alleluia is veritably in the “key” of C-Lydian. It was among my first compositions in which I began to embrace my jazz background more fully.
