Ale Choral Series | MusicSpoke
Series Description
The ʻAleʻa Choral Series aims to uphold the integrity of mele (music) in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) in the choral medium by highlighting composers and arrangers who are Native Hawaiian or have strong cultural or academic connections to the islands. The series provides choirs with well-researched and vetted works to counter industry trends that rely on outsiders to interpret Hawaiian music and knowledge, which often divert resources and recognition away from Hawaiʻi. Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono.
From the Curator
Choral music in Hawaiʻi is a living tradition. The ʻAle' a Choral Series was established to ensure that when choirs perform Hawaiian language works, they are accessing scores that have been vetted for linguistic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and musical excellence. By prioritizing creators with deep ties to these islands, we ensure that the resources generated by this music return to the communities that birthed it.- Thomas Goedeckey
