About the Score

An anthem with text from the Scottish island of Barra in the Hebrides. The text is drawn from Alexander Carmichael’s Carmina Gadelica, a fascinating collection from the early 20th Century. This ode to the sun is inherently secular, but also calls to mind references to the morning and evening star [Venus], which has long been associated with the Virgin Mary (Ave Maris Stella). This anthem would be suitable for sacred or secular occasions.
