About the Score

Commissioned and premiered by Michael Frasier and The Grande Ronde Community Choir in memory of Thomas Madden in 2018.

Thomas Madden was a native Montanan who spent the latter half of his life living and teaching in Eastern Oregon. The poem, "Gardening: Early May", was published in a collection of his poetry titled, "Graves in Wheat."

Gardening: Early May by Thomas Madden

Rooting in the garden planting potatoes and chopping buttonweed without hurting it much I lose myself in a drop of water on a raspberry leaf drying myself thin in a patch of brown dirt

When the big wave comes I will swell and join with earth and fire to curl and recurl on the crest of a wave before I disappear into the blue water clear as glass thick as soil
