About the Score

I’m always excited at the beginning of the composition process: talking with the commissioning Artistic Director, kicking around ideas about texts, and discussing all of the possibilities that could be brought to fruition by the ensemble. In this case, the Artistic Director put all of these decisions in my court and asked me to choose a text, which (honestly) is one of the most difficult things for me to do as a composer. So, I sat down one night and began combing through poem after prose after essay after text amalgam until finally I did what any great composer would do – I texted my mom. She suggested (and without hesitation, I might add) I look at the full text to 1 Corinthians 13. Of course, I knew the passage that is ubiquitous at weddings, but hadn’t really taken a look at the entire text. After a few hours of thought, it was clear that these were the words I wanted to set, and to challenge myself to approach (what I believed to be) a very familiar passage with fresh musical language. My favorite memory with this piece to date is hearing a performance by the brilliant Joshua Copeland and the Antioch Chamber Ensemble.
